Gum (or periodontal disease), more so than decay is the number one cause of lost teeth, and it's becoming increasingly common.
Gum problems begin if you don't keep up a good level of dental hygiene, which can result in bacterial infections like gingivitis that attack the gums and bone that support your teeth.
Prevention better than cure
If left uncontrolled, gum disease can result in having to have numerous teeth removed, followed by cosmetic treatments to improve the look of your face and smile afterwards, so it's something to be avoided.
Good dental hygiene regular brushing, flossing and use of a mouth wash ' will get rid of the plaque that leads to gingivitis and other gum diseases, while regular visits to a dentist will pick up on other signs.
