If you are one of the thousands of adults in the UK who’s afraid of the dentist, you may think that a beautiful smile – even a healthy mouth – is beyond your reach. At Glow Dental in Battersea, we know that this isn’t the case. We understand dental phobia and fear or anxiety about visiting a dental practice, but we are keen to point out that this no longer needs to be a barrier to treatment.
Many people are scared of the dentist to a greater or lesser degree. This fear can range from mild anxiety to full-blown, panic attack inducing phobia, and can leave sufferers feeling helpless. At our Battersea dental practice, our dedicated and caring team empathises with the feelings of nervous patients. However, we believe we can help you to get the treatment you need and the smile you deserve. We have many formerly nervous patients who are happy to testify that our methods work.
What causes fear of the dentist?
There are a plethora of reasons people cite for dental anxiety, from a bad experience during childhood to a sense of shame if they have not had treatment for many years. Drills and needles are also common triggers of anxiety. Sometimes, there is no one identifiable cause.
Whatever the reason for your fear, the team at our Battersea practice can help. We offer two options for treatment under sedation: intravenous or inhalation sedation. Inhalation sedation uses gas and air to induce a deeply relaxed state, so you can still work with your dentist but will feel no anxiety or pain.
Intravenous sedation is delivered via a small needle and again makes you very relaxed. You should always follow your dentist’s instructions regarding what to do in the hours before and after dental sedation.
