As we all know, teeth don’t grow back, and here at Glow Dental we recommend the use of custom made sportsguards for all those taking part in contact or extreme sport. We take a digital scan of your teeth, then send it to the dental laboratory, who makes the custom guard, in your choice of colour, within 10 days. If you think you or someone you know would benefit from a sportsguard, speak to your dentist for more information.
1. What is a sports guard?
A sports guard (mouthguard) is a protective device worn over the teeth during sports to prevent injuries to the teeth, gums, and jaw.
2. Who should wear a sports guard?
Anyone playing contact or high-impact sports such as rugby, boxing, hockey, football, basketball, martial arts, skateboarding, or CrossFit.
3. Are custom-made mouthguards better than shop-bought ones?
Yes. Custom guards fit perfectly, offer far better protection, and are more comfortable to breathe and talk with.
4. Can a sports guard help prevent concussions?
It can’t prevent them completely, but a well-fitted guard helps absorb impact forces and may reduce the severity.
5. Can children wear sports guards?
Absolutely. Children and teens are strongly encouraged to wear them, especially as their teeth and jaws are still developing.
6. Can I wear a mouthguard with braces?
Yes. A custom-made guard protects both your teeth and orthodontic appliances from damage.
7. How long does a sports guard last?
Usually 1–2 years for adults. Children may need replacements more often due to growth.
8. How should I clean my sports guard?
Rinse before and after use, brush gently with a soft toothbrush, and store it in a ventilated case.
9. What happens if my mouthguard feels loose or uncomfortable?
It may need adjustment or replacement. A poor fit reduces both comfort and protection.
10. Why is a dentist-made sports guard recommended?
It offers the highest level of protection, durability, and comfort — far superior to boil-and-bite or stock guards.
