Your gums are the unsung heroes of your smile. They keep your teeth strong and healthy, providing them with crucial support and protection. When gum health starts to fail, teeth also suffer as a result so protecting your smile from gum disease is crucial. Practising regular oral hygiene as well as regular trips to the hygienist will keep gum disease at bay. Sometimes, however, specialist care is needed to help get gums back to full health.
Periodontics is the field of dentistry concerned with gum health and treating gum disease. It also covers gum surgery, such as gum grafting and contouring. Periodontists are also able to maintain implants, preventing them from failing due to gum disease.
Gum disease has two stages. The first stage, gingivitis, is preventable and treatable. Hygiene appointments on top of your routine brushing and cleaning protect your smile from this stage of gum disease. The other stage, periodontitis, occurs if gum disease is left untreated. This condition isn’t as treatable as gingivitis.
Periodontal therapy involves removing the cause of the gum disease and helping the healthy gum to heal. Using specialist tools, we can scale away plaque and tartar from below the gum line. We have a dental laser that promises the best results, encouraging a much faster recovery rate and sterilising the tooth. We can remove any infected tissue, leaving only healthy gum tissue behind.
Periodontal treatments are more involved than hygiene appointments and can involve surgery. We can offer sedation to help more nervous patients to feel at ease during their appointments.
