Using a very fine non-toxic powder the Air Abrasion unit can gently spray away areas of decayed tooth. Because with Air Abrasion there is no heat or vibration generated, it can usually be used without any local anaesthetic injections.
Air Abrasion is great at removing stains and early areas of decay. It cannot be used for more complex dental treatment such as the removal of large fillings or in preparation for crowns. The use of Air Abrasion can even uncover areas of very early decay that is not detected on x-rays.
The technology is also useful in repairing existing composite or porcelain restorations that may have chipped or fractured by roughening their surfaces to allow better bonding of the new material. Porcelain veneers can also be repaired more easily without the risk of fracture or damage as there is no vibration. All patients may benefit from the use of this treatment, but it is especially useful in the treatment of children and adults where local anaesthetic is not possible due to medical conditions.
Is Air Abrasion painful?
Most patients find air abrasion completely comfortable. Because it doesn’t create heat, vibration, or pressure, it often feels like a gentle stream of air. In many cases, no injections are needed.
Is Air Abrasion safe?
Yes. Air abrasion uses a very fine, non-toxic powder that is safe and well tolerated. Patients wear protective glasses to avoid any irritation.
Can Air Abrasion treat all cavities?
Not always. Air abrasion works best for early decay, small fillings, or surface treatments. Larger cavities and crown preparations usually still require traditional dental instruments.
Is Air Abrasion suitable for children?
Yes. Air abrasion is especially helpful for children, as it avoids the noise, vibration, and fear often linked to dental drills.
Does Air Abrasion cost more than traditional treatment?
The cost varies depending on the procedure. For small fillings or stain removal, air abrasion is usually similar in price to conventional treatment.
Can Air Abrasion replace my regular check-ups?
No. Air abrasion is a treatment method, not a replacement for regular dental care. Routine check-ups are still important to detect early signs of decay or gum problems.
