How Much Does Tooth Extraction Cost in the UK

Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure carried out when a tooth cannot be saved or when removing it is the best option for your oral health. Patients often want to know not only how the treatment works, but also how much it costs and why prices vary depending on the type of extraction needed.

At Glow Dental, our tooth extraction fees are as follows:

Extractions (simple) from £195

Surgical extractions from £300

Wisdom teeth extractions from £350 – £650

The final fee depends on the complexity of the tooth, its position, and how straightforward it is to remove. Some teeth can be taken out quickly and easily, while others require a more advanced surgical approach.

Simple Extractions

Simple extractions at Glow Dental are available from £195.

A simple extraction is usually carried out when the tooth is fully visible above the gum and can be removed without surgery. This type of extraction is often recommended when a tooth has been badly damaged by decay, has become loose due to gum disease, or cannot be restored successfully with other treatment.

During a simple extraction, the area is numbed with local anaesthetic so the procedure is comfortable. The dentist then gently loosens the tooth and removes it using dental instruments designed for this purpose. In many cases, the process is relatively quick and straightforward.

Simple extractions are generally suitable for teeth that are easy to access and have roots that can be removed without needing to cut into the gum. Recovery is usually uncomplicated, although it is normal to experience some tenderness for a short time afterwards. Following aftercare advice carefully helps the area heal properly and reduces the risk of complications.

Surgical Extractions

A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth cannot be removed as easily as a simple extraction. This may be because the tooth has broken at the gum line, has not fully come through, is difficult to reach, or has roots that make removal more complex. In these situations, a more advanced approach is required.

With a surgical extraction, the dentist may need to make a small opening in the gum to reach the tooth more effectively. In some cases, the tooth may be removed in sections to make the procedure safer and less traumatic for the surrounding area. Because this type of treatment is more complex, it takes more time and planning than a simple extraction.

Surgical extraction is often recommended for teeth that are badly broken, severely decayed below the gum, or trapped under the gum. Recovery may take a little longer than after a simple extraction, and there can be more swelling or discomfort for a few days, but this is usually manageable with the right aftercare.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth are the teeth at the very back of the mouth and are often the most troublesome. They may need to be removed if they are causing pain, infection, swelling, repeated gum problems, damage to nearby teeth, or if there is not enough space for them to come through properly.

The cost of wisdom tooth removal varies because no two cases are exactly the same. Some wisdom teeth are fully erupted and can be removed more easily, while others are partially erupted or impacted, meaning they are trapped under the gum or bone. These more difficult cases require a surgical approach and naturally involve more time and complexity.

Wisdom tooth extraction can be straightforward or quite involved depending on the position of the tooth and whether it is affecting surrounding structures. Before treatment, the dentist will assess the tooth carefully and explain the most suitable option. This allows you to understand both the procedure and the fee involved before going ahead.

After wisdom tooth removal, it is common to have some swelling, soreness, and limited jaw opening for a few days. Proper aftercare is especially important following this type of extraction, and patients are usually advised to rest, avoid certain foods, and keep the area clean while healing takes place.

Why the Cost of Tooth Extraction Can Vary

Tooth extraction costs vary because the level of difficulty can be very different from one patient to another. The position of the tooth, the shape of the roots, whether the tooth is broken, and whether surgery is needed all affect the complexity of treatment. A tooth that is easy to access and remove will generally cost less than one that requires a more advanced surgical procedure.

Wisdom teeth in particular can vary significantly in price because they are often less accessible and more likely to be impacted. In contrast, a simple extraction is usually more predictable and less time-consuming.

When a Tooth May Need to Be Removed

A tooth may need to be extracted for a number of reasons. Common reasons include severe tooth decay, infection, advanced gum disease, overcrowding, damage that cannot be repaired, or problematic wisdom teeth. In some cases, removal is the best way to relieve pain, prevent further complications, and protect the health of neighbouring teeth and gums.

The aim is always to preserve natural teeth whenever possible. However, when a tooth is beyond saving, extraction can be the most appropriate and beneficial treatment.
