Can a Dentist Give a Sick Note in the UK?

Patients often ask: can a dentist give a sick note in the UK?
The answer is yes—but only in certain situations, and there are limits on what a dentist can and cannot provide.

What is a “sick note” in the UK?

In the UK, a “sick note” usually means a Statement of Fitness for Work, commonly called a fit note.
Employers use fit notes to confirm that someone is not fit for work, or may need adjustments.

Can a dentist issue a fit note?

Yes. A dentist can issue a fit note if your time off work is directly related to a dental condition or dental treatment.
For example:

  • Severe dental infection or abscess
  • Complications after dental surgery
  • Significant facial swelling or pain
  • Recovery after extractions or oral surgery

If your inability to work is due to a dental issue, a dentist can certify this.

When a dentist cannot give a sick note

A dentist cannot usually issue a sick note if the reason you are off work is not dental-related, such as:

  • Flu or general illness
  • Back pain
  • Stress or mental health concerns
  • Medical conditions outside dentistry

In these situations, you should contact your GP or another appropriate medical professional.

Do you need a sick note for a short absence?

Often, no. For the first 7 calendar days of sickness, employees in the UK can usually
self-certify their absence to their employer.

A fit note is typically only needed if your absence lasts more than 7 days or if your employer asks
for medical evidence.

What can a dentist provide instead of a fit note?

Depending on your situation, a dentist may provide:

  • An official fit note (if appropriate), or
  • A dental letter confirming treatment, dates, and recovery advice

Some employers accept a dental letter as evidence, but this depends on company policy.

Is a dentist’s sick note accepted by employers?

In most cases, yes—as long as the absence is clearly dental-related. Employers generally accept fit notes
and letters that explain the reason for absence and the expected duration.

NHS vs private dentists

Both NHS and private dentists can provide medical evidence if clinically appropriate. However, practices may differ in
how they handle paperwork, and some documentation may be chargeable if it is outside routine care.

Do dentists charge for sick notes?

Fit notes that are clinically required are often provided without charge, but private letters or reports
(especially those requested for work or insurance purposes) may involve a fee. It’s best to ask the practice in advance.

What if you need more time off than expected?

If your recovery takes longer, or your symptoms become broader than a dental issue, you may need to contact your GP for
further assessment and ongoing certification.

Summary

  • Yes, a dentist can give a sick note in the UK
  • It must be directly related to a dental condition or dental treatment
  • For the first 7 days, self-certification usually applies
  • Dentists cannot certify non-dental illnesses
  • Some employers may accept a dental letter instead of a fit note

If you’ve had dental treatment or a serious dental issue that affects your ability to work, your dentist may be able to
provide the right documentation—or advise you on the best next step.
