Is Citric Acid Bad for Your Teeth?
Citric acid can damage tooth enamel when your teeth are exposed to it frequently or for prolonged periods. It is naturally found in citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruit, but it is also widely added to fizzy drinks, fruit drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks, sweets and other products.
This does not mean you need to stop eating oranges or other nutritious fruits. The bigger concern is how often your teeth are exposed to acid. Frequently sipping an acidic drink throughout the day, for example, can be considerably more damaging than having the same drink with a meal.
Over time, repeated acid exposure can cause dental erosion, where the hard surface of the tooth gradually wears away. Because enamel cannot simply grow back once it has been physically lost, prevention and early detection are particularly important.
How Does Citric Acid Damage Tooth Enamel?
Enamel is the hard outer covering that protects the more sensitive layers inside each tooth. It is the hardest substance in the human body, but it is still vulnerable to acids.
When an acidic food or drink comes into contact with your teeth, minerals can temporarily be lost from the enamel surface. Saliva naturally helps neutralise acids and supports remineralisation afterwards.
If acidic exposures are very frequent, however, the mouth may not have enough time to recover between each episode. Gradually, some of the tooth surface can be permanently lost.
This process is known as erosive tooth wear or dental erosion.
Saliva provides an important natural defence because it dilutes and neutralises acids and supplies minerals that help protect tooth surfaces. This is one reason people with a persistently dry mouth can be more vulnerable to erosion.
Is Dental Erosion the Same as Tooth Decay?
No. Tooth erosion and tooth decay are different conditions. This is an important distinction that is often misunderstood.
Dental erosion occurs when acids directly dissolve and wear away the tooth surface. These acids may come from foods and drinks or, in some cases, from the stomach.
Tooth decay, or dental caries, involves bacteria in dental plaque using sugars from your diet and producing acids that demineralise the teeth. If this process continues, a cavity can eventually develop.
This means citric acid is not simply “the cause of cavities”. However, a diet containing both frequent acidic drinks and frequent sugary foods can create separate problems for the teeth.

Which Foods and Drinks Contain Citric Acid?
Citric acid occurs naturally in many fruits and is also used by food manufacturers to provide a sharp or sour flavour and as a preservative.
Potential sources of dietary acid include:

- Oranges and orange juice
- Grapefruit and grapefruit juice
- Fruit juices and smoothies
- Fizzy soft drinks
- Diet and sugar-free fizzy drinks

It is important to remember that “sugar-free” does not necessarily mean tooth-friendly. A drink may contain little or no sugar and therefore present less risk of tooth decay while still being acidic enough to contribute to dental erosion.
Are Lemons, Oranges and Other Citrus Fruits Bad for Your Teeth?
Citrus fruits are nutritious foods containing vitamin C, fibre and other important nutrients, so there is generally no reason to eliminate them from a healthy diet simply because they contain acid.
Current UK preventive dentistry guidance recognises the potential for excessive consumption of acidic fruits to contribute to tooth wear but does not recommend discouraging fruit consumption in the general population.
Instead, if you are susceptible to erosion, think about frequency and eating habits. Constantly grazing on lemons, grapefruit or other very acidic foods gives your teeth repeated acid exposure, while eating fruit as part of a meal gives saliva more opportunity to restore a neutral environment afterwards.
Is Lemon Water Bad for Your Teeth?
Lemon water is often promoted as a healthy alternative to fizzy drinks, but adding lemon juice makes ordinary water considerably more acidic.
An occasional glass is unlikely to cause significant damage to healthy teeth. However, sipping lemon water continuously throughout the day can repeatedly expose the enamel to acid, increasing the potential for erosion over time.
If you regularly drink lemon water:
- Try to drink it with a meal rather than continually throughout the day.
- Do not swish or hold it around your teeth before swallowing.
- Rinse your mouth with plain water afterwards.
- Consider drinking ordinary water between meals instead.
Are Diet Fizzy Drinks Safe for Your Enamel?
Not necessarily. Removing sugar from a drink can reduce its potential to contribute to tooth decay, but many diet drinks remain acidic.
Acids such as citric acid, phosphoric acid and other food acids may still contribute to erosive tooth wear even when a drink contains no sugar.
This is why plain water is a much more tooth-friendly everyday drink. UK government guidance identifies unflavoured still and sparkling water as having a low erosive potential, while fruit-flavoured sparkling waters and many other acidic drinks can present a greater risk.
Why Is Sipping Acidic Drinks Worse Than Drinking Them With a Meal?
The frequency and duration of acid exposure are particularly important.
If you drink a glass of orange juice with breakfast, your teeth experience an acidic period and your saliva then begins neutralising the mouth.
If you carry a bottle of juice, sports drink or lemon water and take a sip every few minutes for several hours, your teeth are repeatedly exposed to acid before the mouth has fully recovered.
For this reason, UK preventive dental guidance recommends keeping acidic drinks mainly to mealtimes and avoiding habits such as swishing, sucking or holding acidic drinks around the teeth.
What Are the Signs of Enamel Erosion?
Dental erosion usually develops gradually, which means you may not notice it in its early stages.
Possible signs include:
- Tooth sensitivity, particularly to cold, hot or sweet foods and drinks
- Teeth looking increasingly yellow as the darker dentine beneath the enamel becomes more visible
- Thin or translucent edges on the front teeth
- Teeth appearing smoother or shinier than before
- Small depressions or “cupping” appearing on chewing surfaces
- Changes in the shape or length of teeth
- Rough or chipped edges as tooth structure becomes thinner
- Increasing sensitivity as erosion progresses into dentine
Because tooth wear may progress without significant pain, regular dental examinations allow your dentist to identify and monitor changes before substantial amounts of tooth structure are lost.
Can Tooth Enamel Grow Back?
Enamel that has physically eroded away cannot naturally grow back.
However, this is slightly different from early mineral loss. Saliva and fluoride can help minerals return to areas of enamel that have been temporarily demineralised before the tooth structure itself has been lost.
Fluoride toothpaste therefore remains an important part of protecting your teeth. Once erosion has caused permanent loss of enamel or dentine, however, that missing tooth structure will not regenerate naturally.
This is why identifying the cause of erosion and preventing further wear is usually the first priority.
Should You Brush Your Teeth After Eating Oranges or Drinking Lemon Water?
It is generally sensible to avoid vigorously brushing your teeth immediately after a significant acidic exposure, when the enamel surface may have been temporarily softened.
Rinse with plain water and give your saliva time to neutralise the mouth first. Waiting around 30 minutes before brushing is commonly recommended, although current UK evidence suggests that reducing how frequently the teeth are exposed to acid is more important than focusing heavily on the precise timing of brushing.
When you do brush, use a fluoride toothpaste and a gentle technique rather than scrubbing aggressively.
How Can You Protect Your Teeth From Citric Acid?
You do not need to remove every acidic food from your diet. A few practical changes can substantially reduce how much acid your teeth experience.
1. Reduce the Frequency of Acid Exposure
Rather than repeatedly sipping acidic beverages throughout the day, try to keep them to mealtimes. Your saliva then has time to neutralise the mouth between acid exposures.
2. Drink Plain Water Between Meals
Water helps rinse food acids from the mouth without introducing further acidity or sugar.
3. Don’t Swish Acidic Drinks Around Your Mouth
Holding a drink against the teeth or swishing it around increases the amount of time the enamel remains in contact with acid.
4. Rinse With Water Afterwards
Drinking or rinsing gently with plain water after an acidic food or drink can help clear residual acid from the mouth.
5. Consider a Straw for Acidic Drinks
For drinks that cannot easily be avoided, using a straw positioned towards the back of the mouth may reduce some direct contact with the front teeth. However, a straw should not be seen as a complete solution — reducing the frequency of acidic drinks remains more important.
6. Use Fluoride Toothpaste
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride helps make the tooth surface more resistant to acid and supports the remineralisation process.
7. Encourage Saliva Production
Saliva is one of your mouth’s most important natural defences against acid. Drinking water and, where appropriate, chewing sugar-free gum after meals can encourage saliva flow.
8. Attend Regular Dental Appointments
Your dentist can monitor existing tooth wear and look for changes over time. A dental hygienist can also provide personalised advice about cleaning your teeth effectively and maintaining good oral health.
Can Stomach Acid Damage Your Teeth Too?
Yes. Not all dental erosion comes from food and drink.
Stomach acid is highly acidic and can reach the mouth as a result of:
- Acid reflux or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
- Frequent vomiting
- Some gastrointestinal conditions
- Conditions associated with recurrent vomiting
A dentist may sometimes notice a pattern of erosion that suggests the acid is coming from inside the body rather than from dietary sources.
If unexplained erosion is present alongside frequent heartburn, acid reflux, regurgitation or vomiting, your dentist may recommend discussing the symptoms with your GP as well as taking steps to protect your teeth.
Can a Dentist Repair Teeth Damaged by Acid Erosion?
The appropriate treatment depends on how much tooth structure has been lost and whether the erosion is still progressing.
With mild erosion, the priority may simply be to identify the cause, reduce acid exposure, manage sensitivity and regularly monitor the teeth.
If more substantial tooth structure has been lost, restorative treatment may sometimes be appropriate. Depending on the individual case, this could include:
- Composite bonding to rebuild worn or damaged areas of teeth
- Composite fillings where a tooth also has decay or structural damage
- Porcelain veneers in selected cosmetic and restorative cases
- Dental crowns where a tooth requires more extensive protection or restoration
There is no single treatment for dental erosion, so your dentist will assess the pattern and severity of wear before recommending the most conservative appropriate option.
Do You Need to Stop Eating Acidic Foods?
Usually, no.
A healthy diet can contain citrus fruits, tomatoes and other naturally acidic foods. The aim is not to become anxious about individual foods but to avoid exposing your teeth to acid unnecessarily throughout the entire day.
The most useful changes are often simple:
- Keep acidic drinks to mealtimes where possible.
- Choose plain water between meals.
- Avoid constantly sipping lemon water, juice, fizzy drinks or sports drinks.
- Do not swish acidic drinks around your teeth.
- Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
- Attend regular dental check-ups so tooth wear can be monitored.
