What Dental Treatment Is Free When You Are Pregnant?

Many people are surprised to learn that dental care can be free during pregnancy in the UK. This support is designed to help protect both your oral health and your baby’s wellbeing at an important time.

Are dental treatments free during pregnancy?

Yes. If you are pregnant, you are entitled to free NHS dental treatment during your pregnancy and for up to 12 months after your baby is born, as long as you receive NHS care.

You will need a valid maternity exemption certificate (MatEx) or proof of eligibility to access free treatment.

What dental treatment is covered?

All necessary NHS dental treatment is free during pregnancy. This includes:

  • Dental check-ups and examinations
  • X-rays if clinically required
  • Fillings
  • Extractions
  • Root canal treatment
  • Gum disease treatment
  • Emergency dental care

Treatment is provided based on clinical need, not cosmetic preference.

What is not covered?

Cosmetic treatments are not included under free NHS dental care. This means procedures such as:

  • Teeth whitening
  • Veneers
  • Cosmetic bonding

These treatments are usually only available privately.

Why dental care is important during pregnancy

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can increase the risk of gum disease, bleeding gums, and tooth decay. Poor oral health has also been linked to pregnancy complications, making regular dental care especially important.

Seeing a dentist during pregnancy helps identify and treat problems early, keeping both you and your baby healthier.

NHS vs private dental care during pregnancy

While NHS treatment is free during pregnancy, access can be limited due to appointment availability and waiting times. Some patients choose private care for:

  • Shorter waiting times
  • Longer appointments
  • More personalised care
  • A calmer and more flexible experience

Your options during pregnancy

If you are pregnant, it is strongly recommended that you see a dentist, whether through the NHS or privately. Free NHS dental care is a valuable benefit, but private practices can still be a good option if access is limited or you prefer a more personalised approach.

Looking after your oral health during pregnancy is an important part of caring for yourself and your baby.

Visited Glow Dental for the first time today, and it's been some time since I had a dental check up. Stephen was an excellent dentist, really put me at ease, and I valued that he could not only talk me through - but also show me - the condition of my teeth and gums. He was really helpful with all my questions too.- Felicity B
