Will Teeth Whitening Remove Stains?

Teeth whitening is designed to lighten the colour of natural teeth, but it does not remove all stains in the same way. Whether whitening works depends on the type of stain, how deep it is, and the overall health of your teeth. This article explains which stains respond well to whitening, which do not, and what alternatives may be needed.

How teeth whitening works

Professional teeth whitening uses peroxide-based gels that break down stain molecules within the tooth structure. Unlike polishing, which removes surface debris, whitening changes the internal colour of the enamel and dentine, making teeth appear lighter overall.

Types of tooth stains

Surface stains (extrinsic stains)

Surface stains sit on the outer layer of the tooth and are the most common type. They are usually caused by:

  • Tea and coffee
  • Red wine
  • Smoking or vaping
  • Strongly coloured foods

These stains respond very well to teeth whitening. In many cases, a professional scale and polish followed by whitening can significantly improve colour.

Deep stains (intrinsic stains)

Intrinsic stains develop within the tooth structure and are often present for many years. Common causes include:

  • Age-related darkening of teeth
  • Previous dental trauma
  • Certain medications taken during tooth development
  • Large fillings showing through enamel

Whitening can still improve intrinsic stains, but results may be more gradual and limited. Multiple sessions or longer treatment times may be required.

Stains that do not respond to whitening

Some discolouration will not improve with whitening gels. These include:

  • White spots caused by enamel defects
  • Grey or brown marks from severe tooth trauma
  • Colour differences caused by crowns, veneers, or fillings
  • Discolouration from advanced enamel wear

In these cases, whitening may make surrounding teeth lighter, making the stained area more noticeable.

Does whitening remove stains or just lighten teeth?

Whitening does not scrub or remove stains in the same way as a polish. Instead, it lightens the overall shade of the tooth by breaking down stain pigments. This is why results can vary depending on stain type and depth.

Why some teeth whiten better than others

Several factors influence how well whitening removes stains:

  • Type of stain and how long it has been present
  • Natural thickness and colour of enamel
  • Age of the patient
  • Diet and smoking habits
  • Consistency of whitening treatment

This is why two people using the same whitening system may see very different results.

What to do if whitening does not remove stains

If whitening alone does not achieve the desired result, your dentist may suggest alternative or additional treatments, such as:

  • Professional hygiene treatment to remove surface staining
  • Composite bonding to mask discoloured areas
  • Veneers or crowns for more severe or uneven staining
  • Internal whitening for non-vital (root-treated) teeth

How to improve whitening results

To get the best possible outcome from whitening:

  • Have a professional clean before starting whitening
  • Follow the recommended whitening schedule
  • Avoid staining foods and drinks during treatment
  • Maintain good oral hygiene
  • Discuss expectations with your dentist beforehand

Conclusion

Teeth whitening can remove or significantly reduce many common stains, especially those caused by food, drink, and smoking. However, not all stains respond in the same way, and some types of discolouration require alternative cosmetic treatments. A dental assessment helps determine whether whitening will be effective for your specific type of staining and what options will give the best result.
